Particle nucleation events in the Ohio River Valley

Pryor, Barthelmie, Hopke, Mauldin and Westberg
Our project is funded by NSF (ATM 0544745 and supplemental award, May 2006 - April 2010) and has the following primary objective:
to quantify the frequency and characteristics of nucleation events and occurence of high concentrations of ultra-fine particles at forest sites in the Ohio River Valley

We have also taken previous measurements at another forest in Denmark and are also co-operating on measurements being conducted on a global cruise (the Galathea expedition - see below for more details) so we will also collect marine measurements

Nucleation In ForesTs (NIFTy) experiment
Conducted during May 2008.

Previous research
The data we collect in Indiana are comparable to those we have collected at another forest site - at Soroe in Denmark which is a focal site for Carboeurope and Nitroeurope EU projects. This project is linked to the following international research activities: the Nordic Center of Excellence on Biosphere - Aerosol - Cloud - Climate Interactions, the European Union, Integrated Project EUCAARI, the Galathea expedition
